SUMMARY
On today’s podcast we have the adventurous Heather Ellis. Heather is a communications specialist with a degree in journalism, and is the author of two books: ‘Ubuntu’ which details her motorcycle journey from south to north Africa and ‘Timeless On The Silk Road’ which details her motorcycle journey along the fabled Silk Roads of antiquity.
What I personally love about this conversation is Heather’s courage shown throughout her motorcycling journeys. She travels on her motorcycle throughout some of the most fascinating and symbolic places on Earth, and it is in this conversation that we go deeper on her thoughts, reflections and experiences of travelling solo through Africa; a continent that has many a contrasting opinion, but one that is not truly ever known unless stepped onto. The culture, the history, the characters and the inevitable self-development and growth that comes from such places. Heather also shares very openly about finding out at 30 years-old that she had contracted HIV and how this diagnosis silenced her. She shares how it fuelled fear of shame, disapproval, rejection and isolation. All things that are not Ubuntu; Ubuntu being “I am because we are”; the essence of being human.
Please enjoy this conversation on the To Be Human Podcast with the lovely Heather Ellis.

In this episode of the PIERS Association Podcast, host Roxy Cross sits down with Heather Ellis of ChiroHealth USA (CHUSA) to talk about one of the most overlooked pieces of personal injury practice: compliance, dual fee schedules, and protecting your clinic while still taking care of patients.
Heather shares the origin story of ChiroHealth USA — born out of a personal injury case and a well-intentioned decision that turned into the darkest day of a chiropractor’s career. When “Mrs. Jones” compared her discounted cash fees to the PI fee schedule, she reported the doctor to the attorney general, not understanding the difference between insurance billing and cash courtesy. That painful moment led to the creation of a national solution: a compliant, ethical way to offer discounts without risking dual fee schedule violations.
In this conversation, Roxy and Heather unpack:
-How ChiroHealthUSA functions as a discount medical plan organization (DMPO)
-Why “my fee is my fee… unless you’re part of a network” is the compliant answer in a deposition
-How CHUSA helps practices avoid dual fee schedules and potential inducement violations
-Why personal injury and cash patients must be handled differently — and how to bridge that gap
-How a simple $49 annual membership (covering the whole family) can improve access, retention, and compliance
-Real stories of doctors who were ready to close their doors — and what changed that
-How the program supports patient retention, revenue growth (often 20%+ in year one), and peace of mind
-The millions ChiroHealth USA has poured back into the profession through scholarships, associations, and advocacy
Heather also shares a deeply personal story about her mother, a hardship patient who became an enthusiastic chiropractic advocate — carpooling friends, filling a waiting room, and proving the real ripple effect of chiropractic care.
At its core, this episode is about compliance, confidence, and chiropractors valuing themselves as much as they value their patients.

Known for her solo motorcycle journeys across Africa and beyond, Heather opens up about the moments that shaped her long before the adventures ever began: growing up in rural Australia, navigating family expectations, and learning to trust her own instincts even when the road ahead was unclear.
