Welcome back to the channel! Today we're diving into ono of Cornwall's really cool underwater wildlife events— the Spider Crab Aggregation. A time of the year where large numbers of spider crabs emerge from deeper waters and gather together in huge numbers, in this case in the shallows Newquay bay. The aggregation is a mass gathering of spider crabs, often involving hundreds or even thousands of individuals. These are primarily when the crabs prepare to moult — shedding their hard outer shell so they can grow. During this process, their new shell remains soft and vulnerable for several days, leaving them exposed to predators. By gathering together in huge groups, they gain protection through safety in numbers, with newly moulted crabs often sheltering within the centre of the aggregation while their shells harden. Visibility was reasonable and water temperature at 15 degrees C. These crabs are Maja brachydactyla, otherwise known as Cornish King Crab or European Spider crab.
