In 1876, thousands of prospectors poured into a narrow gulch of dead trees on stolen Lakota land and built a city that had no law, no railroad, and no legal right to exist. Within months, Deadwood had 173 businesses, a newspaper, a theater performing Broadway hits for gold dust, and the most famous murder in Old West history. This documentary traces the full arc of that improbable place — from the gold rush chaos and Wild Bill Hickok's killing at Saloon No. 10, through the great fire of 1879 that leveled 300 buildings and the Victorian rebuilding in brick and stone that followed, to the rise of the Homestake Mine and the Hearst fortune, the construction of grand hotels like the Bullock and the Franklin, the flourishing and disappearance of the largest Chinatown east of San Francisco, the slow twentieth-century decline as the mines mechanized and the population drained away, and finally the controversial bet on legalized gambling that saved the architecture but changed the town's character forever. It's a story about what American cities used to be — the deals that built them, the industries that sustained them, the buildings that embodied their ambitions — and about what happens when all of that quietly comes apart.
