Inspired by the Irish ancestors that ventured before him, underwater cameraman Ken O’Sullivan explores the dark depths of the North Atlantic – and immerses the viewer in the mesmerising world of marine life exploration. He addresses the urgent struggle to conserve the stunning sea life he encounters and pays homage to the ancient spirit of exploration.

Stygiomedusa gigantea is one of the largest invertebrate predators known in the ocean, yet little is understood about its ecology and behavior. Stygiomedusa lacks tentacles, but has four extraordinarily large oral arms that are presumably used to envelope prey. The swimming bell of this spectacular medusa can reach over one meter across with arms over ten meters long.
A symbiotic relationship between Stygiomedusa and the fish, Thalassobathia pelagica, was confirmed in 2003 when scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) filmed the pair swimming together in the Gulf of California. The fish has adapted to using the medusa as a hiding place in its open ocean habitat.
In twenty-seven years of scientific ROV surveys, researchers at MBARI have been lucky enough to observe this rare animal seven times, from depths of 750 meters down to 2187 meters.

This one won't kill you — but it will absolutely send you to the hospital. And yet, Nam Dinh, Northern Vietnam built an entire economy off it anyway. And the secret isn't the jellyfish. It's what they figured out how to do with it that nobody else in the world has.
Because here's what makes no sense on paper — the most venomous part of the animal, the part that does the most damage, the part nobody in their right mind would touch?
That's the most expensive thing on the market. Stick around. You'll see exactly why.
This wouldn't have worked out without the help of Tan Long factory. You can find more information about them at this link: http://bit.ly/4sKBDXz

During these first ever ROV dives in Revillagigedo Archipelago, the Nautilus team has encountered some truly otherworldly organisms. This Deepstaria jelly awed us with its shapeshifting abilities as its bag-like bell inflated and undulated with current created by movement of ROV Hercules. Capturing prey in its voluminous bell, a strikingly geometric network of canals delivers nutrients throughout this large jelly’s body.
This close encounter was captured with both our normal ROV Hercules HD camera and a low light camera for bioluminescence designed by Dr. Brennan Phillips at University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography and David Gruber at the City College of New York/Baruch College.

Giant jellyfish-like creatures have forced the closure of a South Coast beach to swimmers. Horseneck Beach in Westport will be inspected Tuesday morning for Portuguese man o' war, which were seen Monday afternoon. The animals are closely related to jellyfish with tentacles that can grow to 100 feet and give painful stings. The beach and parking areas remain open to the public. The water is expected to reopen to the public Tuesday morning after it's inspected and deemed clear of man o’ war.

Over the past two decades, jellyfish have begun to overwhelm our oceans. If things stay on their current trajectory, we could be headed for a future where the entire ocean is thick with jellyfish. So, is there anything that can keep these gelatinous creatures under control? Mariela Pajuelo and Javier Antonio Quinones take a look at the jellyfish’s most ancient predator.

The phylum Cnidaria contains such creatures as jellyfish, anemones, siphonophores and corals. Together, they consist of around 13,000 living species - surprisingly simple, yet beautiful organisms. The importance of these cnidarians cannot be understated. Coral reefs are formed of many millions of cnidarians and are home to staggering biodiversity. Jellyfish are important predators in the open ocean food web, but they serve as food for many other species as well. Sea anemones fulfil a similar role but in the shallows, also serving as hiding places for clownfish. Thus, this unique and abundant group of creatures is integral to the function of many marine communities, from the open ocean to coasts and the benthic zone of the deep sea.

Deep Sea Gigantism | Why Creatures of the Deep Grow so Large. Enter at https://www.omaze.com/naturalworldfacts for your chance to win a Custom Tesla® Model S-APEX and support a great cause, the Petersen Automotive Museum. The experience closes on January 27th at 11:59pm PST and I promise, you don’t want to miss this!
Deep sea (abyssal) gigantism demonstrates the role of natural selection in driving evolution and survival, particularly in an environment characterised by challenging conditions and limited resources. Evolution tends towards the most effective adaptations to grant animals the best chances of survival. And whether large or small, evolution selects for the best-adapted body size to survive these conditions. Though widely debated and often controversial, the research that has been done into the science behind deep sea gigantism has significant implications in the human world; it is believed that climate change may have a greater impact on ocean dwellers than any other population of animals. As the colder oceans warm up, the balance of temperature, oxygen supply, and what organisms are present, will throw the equilibrium off course. And the giants, which rely so heavily on this fine balance, may be the first to go.

Giant Jellyfish Found By Divers In The UK
SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj
A jellyfish filmed swimming off the coast of Cornwall is thought to be the biggest ever caught on camera in Britain. The four-foot wide barrel jellyfish, which is also known as the dustbin-lid jellyfish, was filmed by diver and archeologist Robert Lenfert. Robert, 42, and his wife Natasha, 39, met the giant creature off Pendennis Point, near Falmouth, Cornwall. The pair swam beside the giant sea beast for half an hour as it glided through the water.
