The rapid rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations has created a lot of understandable questions about, well, all of it. Dr. Steven Jacobson, medical director with Premera, and clinical pharmacist Emily Tsiao stopped by to answer as many of those questions as they could. Q: Is the vaccine safe? A: All signs point to yes. Dr. Jacobson: “These types of vaccine technologies have been around for many years. These cannot give you the COVID-19 virus. They're all very effective and there's excellent scientific evidence – they've all been tested in large studies involving perhaps 40,000 people.” Q: How does it work? A: The power of science! Two of them use an mRNA system, while the other uses a viral vector called an adenovirus. Dr. Jacobson: “There's actually three vaccines currently on the market and they're all good vaccines by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines work with what’s called a messenger RNA system. In other words, there's a little particle that is injected into our body, our cells take it up and they actually make a protein that mimics the COVID-19 protein, and then we make antibodies to that and so that if an actual COVID-19 virus comes around then our bodies are prepared to fight it off. “The Johnson and Johnson vaccine works very similarly, although using a different type of virus vector to bring it into the body. It's a cold virus called an adenovirus which, is the common cold that all of us have had at some point, and they use this common cold virus, this genetic material to make these COVID-19 proteins.” Q: Why do some vaccines need two shots, and the other only one? A: It buckles down to the way the scientists designed them. Dr. Jacobson: “[Moderna and Pfizer] were designed to work with two doses. They found that with this particular type of vaccine that getting that booster, they really work best that way. The Johnson and Johnson team designed the vaccine to just be a single dose, which is nice. A couple of different strategies, they both work well.” Q: What about these COVID variants I’m hearing about? Will the vaccine keep me safe from those? A: Things look very promising, but more study is needed. Dr. Jacobson: “For some of the variants, they appear to be just as effective as against the original virus; for a couple of variants, they may be modestly less effective but still pretty good.” Q: When can I get the vaccine? A: It all depends. Emily Tsiao: “Right now Washington state is in what they call Phase 1B, Tier 2, so overall the vaccine’s really opening up to a wider range of people, and as we go through different phases further along more and more people will have the opportunity to be vaccinated.” Dr. Jacobson added one way to know if it's your turn is through a tool sponsored by Washington state called the Washington Phase Finder, which is accessible to anyone at FindYourPhaseWA.org. Q: What about side effects? A: For the most part, they are pretty mild. Reactions can last a few hours to a couple of days. Dr. Jacobson: “A common reaction is that there might be some soreness at the vaccine site, or people might feel a little bit chilled or feverish as part of the vaccine response. I tend to look at it as a good thing, that means your body is kicking in and is developing a robust immune response.” Q: Who should get the vaccine? A: Just about every adult, with a few exceptions. Dr. Jacobson: “If you have a concern, speak with your primary care physician, or speak to your specialist and get their thoughts on whether the vaccine’s appropriate for you.” Q: How can I help the vaccination effort? A: First, get one! But there are lots of ways to pitch in. Emily Tsiao: “I volunteered with the Swedish Seattle University clinic last month, and I have to say that it's just been a tremendous effort by volunteers, by organizations within our community, to provide vaccines to as many people as possible. There's opportunities for non-medical folks to participate and contribute to the cause, there's a lot of opportunity for medically trained folks as well. In fact, the entire main event of Dynamite was exclusively ex-WWE Superstars who once held championships in the company. Former Intercontinental champion Shelton Benjamin faced off with former NXT North American champion Swerve Strickland with former United States champion MVP in Shelton’s corner. After a hard-fought win, Swerve was then attacked by former two-time WWE champion Bobby Lashley. AEW Dynamite’s viewership continues to hover in the low-600,000s, and its no-million streak is dangerously close to no-half million. Tony Khan is in his Ex-WWE Era, where aging former WWE talent are dominating the product. Former WWE champion Dean Klanbrose is the current AEW world champion, and he refuses to even show the belt on national television. This storyline is art-imitating-life, because the end game is clearly going to be homegrown AEW talent rising up and defeat the Whitepool Kombat Klub. But by the time that happens, will anybody still be watching? Will AEW fall into the same trap that WCW and TNA did? Where they became overly reliant on ex-WWE talent to the point where they were just seen as WWE Duplicates? And has AEW damaged its entire brand too much for fans to get onboard with its homegrown stars making a comeback? Subscribe in Swahili. AEW had a clear brand in 2019. The top American stars from New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor rode the waves of a historic All In PPV, and created their own company. They were a Do it Yourself brand of professional wrestling in a time where WWE was flopping with bad storylines and matches that were watered down by Vince McMahon’s vision of the WWE style. The wrestling world needed AEW in 2019, because it gave us an alternative. It also challenged WWE to be better. That plan worked almost too well. Beginning in 2021, when fans stared coming back, WWE’s live event business took off. Roman Reigns’ heel-turn alongside Paul Heyman was a legit game changer, and just like The Whitepool Kombat Klub’s gimmick is to change AEW for the better, AEW’s success led to WWE changing for the better. After threatening WWE at its peak, Vince McMahon’s 2022 retirement leveled the playing field and gave way to the Triple H Era. One with better production, more intricate storylines and AEW free agent Cody Rhodes—the current WWE champion whose departure singlehandedly led to the ongoing implosion of All Elite Wrestling. One so bad, its biggest babyface Will Ospreay’s catchphrase is to “Restore the Feeling” in AEW, and its biggest heel Jon Moxley is challenging AEW originals to be better through tough love. AEW has tried to recapture its momentum by signing one ex-WWE star after another. Mercedes Mone is a double champion. PAC and Claudio Castagnoli are former WWE guys currently in the top heel stable in AEW. As Daddy Ass, the 60-year-old Billy Gunn quickly became the most popular member of The Acclaimed. Even the biggest stars on Collision are MXM. WWE Superstars and storylines are creeping their way to AEW. This would be fine if AEW was a WWE territory like NXT, but it’s not. In fact, it was created to be anything but, and the only real invasion going on in AEW is the invasion of WWE talents coming into AEW and undercutting its brand. This is a big reason NXT, WWE’s third brand, beats AEW most weeks. Because if fans want to see WWE talent in another territory, they’ll just watch a WWE-produced product. Personally, I’d rather watch future WWE stars on the comeup in NXT than former WWE stars on the decline in AEW. AEW is NXT backwards. That’s why NXT has the momentum, and has a good chance to beat AEW on their own night when they go head-to-head next week. We already saw The Hurt Business. Do we need the Hurt Syndacite? We already saw The Shield. Bobby Lashley and the Hurt Business have been the best thing on Raw for months, and it’s time to pay up with the WWE Championship. Bobby Lashley is on GOD Mode right now. Easily the hottest WWE Superstar inside the ThunderDome, the time has come for Lashley to reap the rewards of being the most well-booked WWE Superstar this side of Drew McIntyre. Of course, Lashley had to wait his turn. Kinda like how Kofi Kingston had to wait 11 years before even winning his first world title, or how Big E has to wait 12 years and counting for his turn, or how Mark Henry had to wait 15 years before becoming a world champion, you get it. Twice as hard, half as far. Whatever. But coming off one of the most productive Black History Months in WWE history, one where Bianca Belair is going to WrestleMania and Apollo Crews is finally getting an honest push with a fully fleshed out character, Bobby Lashley has emerged as a WWE Championship material. Last week, my man marked Braun Strowman then, for good measure, he marked The Miz. To borrow a phrase from a silly little man, Bobby Lashley is must-see. Not the technically sound glorified good hand who won’t move the needle outside of an internet wrestling message board, Bobby Lashley is that guy who will make your girlfriend, or mother, or friends who don’t watch wrestling stop what they’re doing and say “who the hell is that?!” Just by looking at him. That’s how you measure a star, boys and girls, and Bobby Lashley has all the potential in the world to transcend as a fire-breathing, dominant world champion. And if you think I’m just biased toward a Black Excellence, which you damn right I am, just listen to some of the white luminaries who have sang Bobby Lashley’s praises: WWE announcer Corey Graves said Quote: “This is a long time coming, I love it so much. I have been singing the praises of Bobby for far too long, Lashley is a guy that for me, I just see dollar signs when I look at him. Give me Bobby Lashley marching into Raymond James Stadium as the WWE Champion against anybody, I don’t care, I’m here for it.” WWE Hall of Famer JBL said Quote: Build the company around Bobby Lashley. He’s that good.  God bless you, Bradshaw. Lashley is set to face The Miz for the WWE Championship tonight, and with Fastlane and WrestleMania still on deck, all signs point to some shenanigans keeping Lashley from what should be his destiny. Hell, even if and when Lashley wins the WWE Championship, it will probably be done to set up Drew McIntyre for that coronation WWE seems to think they owe him because he his big WrestleMania moment last year was reduced to an empty arena in the Performance Center. Oh well. That’s how the game works. It’s the wrestling business, every year there’s a new hot star and as good as Drew McIntyre has been, this doesn’t feel like his moment at all. This feels llke Bobby’s time. I already saw Drew McIntyre beat Brock Lesnar, now I wanna see Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar. I already saw McIntyre and Goldberg, now let’s see Bobby destroy Bill Goldberg. Drew McIntyre is Caucasian enough to where he will get plenty of opportunities as a world champion in this company. When he lost the WWE championship the first time he won it right back a month later, it’s not like he was relegated to tag team action with no rematch like Kofi was. So if Bobby Lashley gets so undeniably hot that another WrestleMania moment has to be put on hold for Drew McIntyre, so be it. Don’t cry for Drew. He’ll be figured into WWE’s long-term plans regardless. This is Bobby’s time. WWE has finally stopped overthinking the Bobby Lashley character and instead gone with the time-honored philosophy of eventuating strengths and hiding weaknesses. No more parodies of his sisters or long, drawn-out interviews with a smiling, humble Bobby Lashley. No more glute poses or cartoon weddings. The second WWE let this man cook as a nearly invincible monster heel with MVP doing the talking, Bobby Lashley instantly became a world title contender. Imagine that. Whether it’s on Monday Night Raw, Fastlane or WrestleMania, Bobby Lashley needs to win that WWE championship. There’s no two ways about this. WWE has finally started to take noticeable steps forward in promoting its black talent, but if Bobby’s moment comes and goes without Lashley getting his hands on the WWE Championship, then it’s going to feel a lot like WrestleMania 19 with Booker T. Regardless of skin color, Bobby his just that dude right now. So WWE, just do what you’ve been doing with Lashley the past year and don’t overthink this.

Believe it or not, that would actually be the most ever. AEW Revolution airs tonight on pay-per-view, and a loaded card features two rising Black stars in position to win high-profile matches. That’s a rarity to this point in AEW, where white wrestlers have dominated on pay-per-view, winning 77% of every pay-per-view match in AEW history, including 81% of singles wins. Headed into Revolution, Black wrestlers have won just 4% of all pay-per-view matches in AEW history, including 3% of singles matches. Of all the instances where a Black talent earned some type of win on pay-per-view—all six of them—four of them involved Scorpio Sky, shout out to him. In its three-year history, AEW has never had more than one Black winner on pay-per-view, something that might happen if Jade Cargill and Keith Lee win their matches. Isiah Kassidy could even add 1/3 of a win as part of a three-man team. Though these numbers remain pathetic, in AEW’s white-dominated promotion, this really is kind of a Revolution for us. The fact that AEW—a predetermined sport—is three years old and can barely put together three Black winners on pay-per-view is hilarious to me. The most popular defense of AEW is—say it with me—“Give it Time,” an often well-intended defense that really doesn’t mean s---t. Whenever I hear people say “Give it Time,” and that “AEW has only been in business for three years,” it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a Dream, that…” No, no, no, no. What is this public education? This isn’t Black History Month at a White School, this is the Blackest YouTube channel in wrestling. I need Mixtape Martin: “First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom” Oooooh, wee, run that back. Run that s--t BACK! “who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom” I’m tired of the bottom of Twitter setting a timetable for a Black wrestler’s freedom. Having to wait your turn when you know damn well a promoter can make you a top star with the power of the pencil is the definition of being a second-class citizen. They even have a Second-Class Citizen’s title called the FTW Championship. If the IWC had their way, Jade Cargill wouldn’t come anywhere near a championship until she was ready. And enough time had passed before she could be free to slay in her quarter hours. Give it Time is such a prominent excuse, even Booker T gave it credence during our interview in an otherwise thoughtful response. “You’ve got to give those guys a little bit of time to actually get what WWE has, and you’ve got to look at the time WWE took to actually get to where it is right now as well.” I get why so many people fall for the myth of “Give it Time,” but the problem is not all time is created equally. There’s a difference between spending time—or investing time—and wasting it. Give it Time works with Jungle Boy. He’s already been anointed as a pillar. He didn’t need to be “ready” to be a pillar, he’s still very green in a lot of areas but AEW, a scripted wrestling company, has decided he’s worth their time and they’ve rewarded him by spending that time to make sure every aspect of his character—from theme music, to ring gear to origin story—stands out above his peers. AEW is spending time to develop Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, MJF and Hook. They’re wasting time with Will Hobbs, Shawn Dean and the vast majority of its Black roster.
