Learning to slow down and embrace seasonal changes this November. When days are suddenly so much shorter and it's dark outside the window most of the time, it's so easy to give in to negativity and dwell on the inevitable coming of winter days. But November is just as cozy, just as beautiful as all other autumn months. I would like to give you some ideas on how to enjoy it! 🍂 Shop my autumnal prints: www.dariamundi.com ________ 🎃 PUMPKIN LOAF: I very much experimented with this recipe, but I'll try to give detailed instructions here. 135g sugar (light brown is best)* 50g maple syrup 2 eggs 350 g pumpkin puree** 50g olive oil 150g yoghurt or sour cream 250g plain white flour (Sieved)*** 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp cardamom 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp allspice 1 inch size (thumb size) piece of fresh ginger**** Pinch of salt 1 tbsp vanilla extract Optional: Zest of 1/2 orange, 100g dark chocolate 👉🏼 Whisk together sugar, maple syrup, olive oil, vanilla and eggs. Add pumpkin puree and yoghurt and mix. Sieve in flour and add spices. Add salt, baking powder and baking soda - mix everything well with a spatula. Grate fresh ginger, orange zest and chop dark chocolate. Mix in until well incorporated. 👉🏼 Oil your baking tin very well or line with parchment paper. Pour in the batter and place into a preheated 160C/ 320F oven for 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. * In the video I used dark brown coconut sugar, which is why my loaf turned out darker and a bit more dense. Coconut sugar works slightly different in baking. It made the cake less fluffy, though it still remained very moist. Using light brown sugar (or white sugar) is best! ** I couldn't find any canned pumpkin, so I used a whole butternut squash. Butternut squash tastes sweeter and has more liquid than regular pumpkin. I roasted 1kg of squash (about 1-1.5h in the oven, slightly salted and oiled) and put it through the sieve to remove extra juice. I then used that juice to make pumpkin jam. You can skip this step and use canned pumpkin instead. 1kg size squash, cooked, sieved and peeled made about 350g of puree. *** Sieving the flour is very important! It makes the loaf much fluffier. **** Fresh ginger gives a slightly different spice and fragrance to the cake. You can use 1 tsp of ground ginger instead, but I do recommend using fresh. 🎃 PUMPKIN JAM: I haven't actually measured this recipe, but I think this is pretty straight forward. You can't go wrong with it. I roasted 1kg of butternut squash (quartered, slightly salted and oiled, then covered with foil) for about 1-1.5 hours. Once it's cooked and cooled, scoop the squash into a fine mesh sieve and press with the spoon - some juice and pumpkin will come out. Scoop out the outside of the sieve to collect any puree that comes out. You can also just put some cooked pumpkin into blender by the way, if you have too much and blend until smooth. Once you have about 150-200ml of pumpkin liquid, place it into a small saucepan. Add 100ml of water, 3-5 tbsp of brown sugar, 2tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 tsp of allspice, 4 cardamom pods, 3 anise stars, 1/2 tsp of whole cloves, 1/2 inch size piece of fresh ginger, orange zest, pinch of salt. Simmer until thickened, then try to make sure it has enough sugar. Adjust sugar and spices as needed. Then pour into a jar. It will stay in the fridge for about 1-2 weeks. 11th Rose: The Creed | explained by Ms Riya James | The Rosary begins with the recitation of the Creed, as if to make the profession of faith the basis of the contemplative journey about to be undertaken. The Creed or the Symbol of the Apostles which is said on the Crucifix of the Rosary is a holy summary of all Christian truths. St Ambrose says, “it is the spiritual seal, our heart's meditation and an ever-present guardian; it is, unquestionably, the treasure of our soul.” (CCC197) It is a prayer that has great merit because faith is the root, foundation and beginning of all Christian virtues, of all eternal virtues and also of all prayers that are pleasing to God. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe.” (Heb. 11, 6) Whosoever wishes to come to God must first of all believe and the greater his faith the more merit his prayer will have, the more powerful it will be, and the more it will glorify God. I shall not take time here to explain the Creed word for word but I cannot resist saying that the first few words “I believe in God” are marvellously effective as a means of sanctifying our souls and of putting devils to rout, because these three words (Credo in Deum) contain the acts of the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity. It was by saying I believe in God that the Saints overcame temptations, especially those against faith, hope or charity - whether they came during their lifetime or at their death. They were also the last words of St. Peter, the Martyr. (1206–1253) A heretic had split his head in two by a cruel blow of his sword and St. Peter was almost at his last gasp, but he somehow managed to trace these words in the sand with his finger before he died. The Holy Rosary contains many mysteries of Jesus and Mary and since faith is the only key which opens up these mysteries for us we must begin the Rosary by saying the Creed very devoutly, and the stronger our faith the more merit our Rosary will have. This faith must be lively and informed by charity; in other words, to recite properly the Rosary, it is necessary to be in God’s grace, or at least in quest of it. This faith must be strong and constant, that is, one must not be looking for sensible devotion and spiritual consolation in the recitation of the Rosary; nor should one give it up because his mind is flooded with countless involuntary distractions or one experiences a strange distaste in the soul and an almost continual and oppressive fatigue in the body. Neither feeling, nor consolation, nor sighs, nor transports, nor the continual attention of the imagination are needed; faith and good intentions are quite enough. “Senses cannot grasp this marvel, Faith must serve to compensate.” The Letter to the Ephesians makes this heartfelt prayer for all the baptized: “May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, so that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have power... to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (3, 17-19).

Dear Pilgrims and Parishioners of Bandel Basilica, Prayerful Greetings of the month of the Holy Rosary! We are just 20 days away from the November Feast, which we shall celebrate with great devotion and love, keeping all the Covid protocol. We have already offered to our blessed mother 30 roses, contemplating the priceless treasure that the Holy Rosary is. In these last 20 days, together with the brief daily reflection, we shall also pray one decade of the Holy Rosary. Dear Pilgrims, St. Louis de Montfort states in his classic book, The Secret of the Rosary: If you say the Rosary faithfully until death, I do assure you that, in spite of the gravity of your sins, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. For even if you are now on the brink of damnation, even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil…sooner or later you will be converted and will amend your life and save your soul. If you say the Rosary devoutly every day of your life. Let me conclude with the words of Pope Pius X: "Of all prayers, the Rosary is the most beautiful, and the richest in graces; of all it is the one which is most pleasing to Mary, the Virgin Most Holy. Therefore love the Rosary and recite it every day with devotion." THIRTY-FIRST ROSE: BLANCHE OF CASTILLE - ALPHONSUS VIII Blanche of Castille, the Queen of France, was deeply grieved because twelve years after her marriage she was still childless. When St. Dominic went to see her he advised her to say her Rosary every day to ask God for the grace of motherhood, and she faithfully carried out his advice. In 1213 she gave birth to her eldest child, Philip, but the child died in infancy. The Queen’s fervour was in no way dulled by this disappointment; on the contrary, she sought Our Lady’s help more than ever before. She had a large number of Rosaries given out to all members of the court and also to people in several cities of the Kingdom, asking them to join her in entreating God for a child. Thus, in 1215, St. Louis was born - the prince who was to become the glory of France and the model of all Christian kings. Alphonsus VIII, King of Aragon and Castille, had been leading a disorderly life. That he may amend his ways, God chastised him in several ways. One way was his defeat in battle, when he fled and took shelter in a city belonging to one of his allies. St. Dominic happened to be in this city on Christmas Day and preached on the Holy Rosary as he always did, pointing out how great are the graces that we can obtain through it. He mentioned, among other things, that those who said the Rosary devoutly would overcome their enemies and would regain all that they had lost in warfare. The King listened attentively and sent for St. Dominic to ask if what he had said about the Rosary was really true. St. Dominic assured him that nothing was more true. The King firmly resolved to say his Rosary every day and persevered for a year in doing so. The very next Christmas Our Lady appeared to him at the end of his Rosary and said: “Alphonsus, you have served me for a year by saying my Rosary devoutly every day, so I have come to reward you: I have obtained the forgiveness of your sins from my Son. And I am going to give you this rosary; wear it, and I promise you that none of your enemies will ever be able to harm you again.” Shortly afterwards the King rallied some troops with the help of his allies and boldly attacked his enemies. He forced them to give back the territory that they had taken from him and to make amends for their other offences against him, and put them completely to rout. In fact, he became so lucky in war that soldiers rushed from all sides to fight under his standard because it seemed that whenever he went to battle the victory was sure to be his. This is not surprising because he never went to battle without first saying his Rosary devoutly on his knees. He made certain that all the members of his court joined the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary and he also saw that his officers and servants were devoted to it. Let us pray: Dear Mother Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary and Lady of Bandel behold me, your child, in prayer at your feet. Accept this Holy Rosary, as a proof of my tender love for you, for the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in atonement for the offenses committed against your Immaculate Heart, and for this special favour which I earnestly request in my Rosary Novena. Please present my petition to your Divine Son, who takes delight in answering your prayers, as at Cana, and never was it heard that anyone who fled to you was left unaided. I offer you this spiritual Bouquet of Roses because I love you. I put all my confidence in you! Our Lady of Bandel, Pray for us. May Almighty God bless you Father+ Son + and + the Holy Spirit, Amen
