Legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne died in the crash of TWA Flight 599 on March 31, 1931. The plane was a Fokker F.10 Trimotor. Unknown to the airline, moisture had seeped into the structure of one of the airplane’s wings, and had begun to weaken the glue that held the wing spars together.

I see some other Skynyrd Fans recognized the unmentioned members that passed. I didn’t know 1/3 the other people mentioned here and I’m almost 60 and a musician. But to forget Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines is insane.

I kept expecting to see Carole Lombard, wife of Clark Gable, on this list. Her plane crashed into Mt. Ptosi, right outside of Las Vegas, on its approach to the Las Vegas airport, on January 16, 1942. She had been off on a war bond tour and her plane was going to stop over in Las Vegas for refueling. Sadly, she never made it home to California.

Had Patsy Cline lived I can only imagine what more profound changes she could've made in country music and all music genres.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned the former Blue Jays/Phillies MLB pitcher Roy Halladay. He was a hall of famer, 2 Cy Young awards, 8 all star games, and he threw 2 very historical no-hitters. He threw a perfect game in Miami, and in his first career postseason start, he threw the 2nd postseason no-hitter in MLB history against the Reds.

Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge was killed in a plane piloted by Orville Wright on September 17, 1908. He was the first man ever to die in a powered airplane. The crash was caused by a stress crack in the propeller.

If you mentioned Jim Croce, why not his very gifted guitarist, Maury Muehleisen? After all, they died in the same crash.R.I.P. Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen.
