Syrian businessman Rami Makhlouf has announced the formation of a new armed group, saying it is needed to defend members of Syria’s Alawite minority during what he described as a dangerous period.
In a video statement, Makhlouf alleged efforts were underway to alter the demographic makeup of Alawite-majority areas and claimed community members faced pressure and discrimination. The announcement comes amid ongoing sectarian tensions in Syria’s coastal regions following the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
Makhlouf previously proposed similar militia structures after the collapse of the Assad government. Once considered one of Syria’s most influential businessmen, Makhlouf built a vast business empire spanning telecommunications, banking and construction before becoming a target of international sanctions and criticism over alleged corruption.

The death of Israeli battalion commander Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon in southern Lebanon has renewed attention on the Israeli military’s 52nd Battalion, a unit previously linked by rights advocates and investigators to the killing of six-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza.
Ben Simhon, who commanded the battalion within the 401st Armored Brigade, was killed alongside three soldiers during operations in southern Lebanon. The battalion has faced international scrutiny since the January 2024 incident in which Hind Rajab, several relatives and paramedics attempting to rescue her were killed.
Legal complaints related to the case have been submitted to the International Criminal Court against former commanders associated with the unit. The latest battlefield death has again drawn public attention to the battalion’s wartime record and ongoing allegations surrounding one of the most widely discussed incidents of the Gaza conflict.
