John Coltrane “THE TIBERI TAPES: A PREVIEW OF THE MYTHICAL RECORDINGS” is a special single-LP release, available now exclusively at participating Record Store Day stores and offering an early glimpse ahead of the full release arriving September 2026 as part of Coltrane’s centennial celebration. For decades, the private recordings of John Coltrane’s group, captured by musician Frank Tiberi in the early 1960s, have lived in legend, surrounded by rumor and deep intrigue. Following Coltrane through clubs in New York and Philadelphia, Tiberi documented the boundary-pushing, otherworldly performances unfolding night after night on his portable tape recorder. John Coltrane In August of 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (“Impressions”), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy’s bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low” and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane’s composition “Africa”, from the Africa/Brass album. Fall season. Rainy Saturday morning. Wife & kids out. Hot cup of coffee. Coltrane on the speakers. Nirvana achieved.

I have listened to this work of art by Coltrane, truely a genius and I can't believe that long ago, maybe 1959, he played in Milano with Miles. I went to the memorable concert, met him and had a drink with him, Alice and a couple of friends, at the Cafe Mexico.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar, a jazz aficionado, titled his autobiography "Giant Steps" in tribute to Coltrane, one of his heroes.

So glad track 4 was interrupted by a Geico ad. Just as Coltrane would have wanted.

“One of my professors taught a chimpanzee to play the saxophone. We all think he’s great. But he only plays jazz, so there’s no way to tell.” –Modern Family
