Its horrifying that so small creatures can be so extremely dangerous

Wow thank you for sharing this story!! Hearing a first person account of this jellyfish I’ve been researching is very fascinating
handyjayes1 (3 years ago)
Not sure if James is underplaying his pain, but most grown men seem to have said its far more painful than James has started, along with vomiting for 18 hours whilst the venom slowly works it's way out

I’m so relieved that you are ok now. I’ve never heard of an irukandji until today. I’ve even looked up deadliest jellyfish before- Definitely eye opening. Thanks for sharing your story.

Good to see James recovered fully and smiling.

Thanks for sharing the story. These things are deadly, thanks for being so open & honest!

Fantastic telling of story. " And you still trusted a stinger suit " Bloody Barmy Brits I lived most of my life in Oz (not in tropics though) and never heard of the Irukandji, and I am a surfer etc. Box jellys yes but not the other little blighters !! I live on Cumbrian coast now, long live the Lions Mane jellyfish, much more friendly.

box jellyfish are no joke either.
mrkipling2201 (3 years ago)
Glad you were ultimately ok. I’m British and first of all we have the stiff upper lip mentality. Until the pain kicks in!! I’ve seen a documentary about these things and they are lethal. Deadly.

I think it was methoxyflurane in the green whistle.
emmabareham (4 years ago (edited))
How scary! So glad you got the treatment quickly! The green whistle you mentioned would have probably been something called Penthrox

So sorry for you both. I saw a documentary about two scientists who study irukanji jellyfish.. they were both stung at same time. Both suffered weeks of agony in hospital. So that is how this Southeastern US citizen learned about Australian jellyfish. Blessings to you both.

Insane story, awesome he got trough :)
emerikb.akrouf2483 (3 years ago)
And the irukandji is the smallest jellyfish in the world, but it’s not the only killer in northern Australia

Thanks for all the data.
averagejoe7923 (3 years ago)
here in the Philippines, we treat it with white vinegar (datu puti vinegar or equivalent) just pour it on top of the affected skin. the sooner you treat it after being stunned, the better. hope this little info would help a lot.
ryanehlis426 (3 years ago)
It must be a nerve toxin ?
cetterus (3 years ago)
Glad you got away with it.
vonnero1250 (2 years ago)
And... irukanji isn't the only deadly jellyfish in those waters...
