RobFuz πŸŽ‰ Celebrating 37 Years of Disney–MGM Studios (1989–2026) On May 1, 1989, Disney–MGM Studios opened its gates anid officially became the third theme park at Walt Disney World. We celebrate 37 years of movie magic, Hollywood dreams, and unforgettable attractions that helped define an era of Disney history. Originally designed as both a theme park and a real working production studio, the park gave guests a behind‑the‑scenes look at how movies and TV were made β€” from soundstages to animation to live tapings. Shows like The Mickey Mouse Club were filmed right inside the park! Back then, the park was much smaller and simpler β€” featuring The Great Movie Ride as its signature attraction and a massive Backstage Studio Tour that took guests through sets, effects, and production areas. There was no Sunset Boulevard, no Tower of Terror, no Fantasmic!, and Star Tours didn’t even open until later that same year. In 2008, the park officially changed its name to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, shifting from a working studio to a celebration of the stories, characters, and worlds of film and TV. Today it’s home to Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and some of the most immersive attractions Disney has ever built. ⭐ Fun Facts β€’ Grand Opening Weekend featured celebrities like Audrey Hepburn, Kevin Costner, Betty White, Annette Funicello, and George Lucas. β€’ The park’s original icon wasn’t the Sorcerer’s Hat β€” it was the Earffel Tower, a studio water tower with Mickey ears. β€’ The original park map hid a giant Hidden Mickey in the layout around the Chinese Theatre. β€’ Walt Disney Animation Florida, located inside the park, later produced Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, and Brother Bear. β€’ The park opened with only one ride (The Great Movie Ride) plus the Backstage Studio Tour β€” everything else was shows and production spaces.
