Euractiv While Germany’s new leftist breakaway party led by Sahra Wagenknecht soars with seven seats to the detriment of far-right AfD, Italy’s Fratelli d’Italia and France’s Rassemblement National are also on the rise, according to mid-February’s Europe Elects projections for Euractiv. Having departed Germany’s traditional left party Die Linke in October, the new party Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) entered projections for the first time at the end of January with three seats and is currently projected to win seven. Wagenknecht’s natural alliance in the European Parliament is The Left group, alongside Die Linke, currently projected to fall to three seats, and the Animal Protection Party, which is expected to hold one seat. If BSW ultimately joins, Wagenknecht’s soaring popularity would boost the German representation in The Left group in the European Parliament to 11 seats, five more than in 2019 – the highest in the Parliament’s history. Far-right keeps winning in France and Italy Marine Le Pen’s far-right Rassemblement National scores three more seats compared to late-January projections, certifying a steady growth since 2019 from 22 to 29 seats currently. The 29 seats include two of L’avenir française, a far-right party affiliated to RN. Such results would solidify Le Pen’s grip over the ID group, whose leadership currently belongs to Italy’s Lega. Matteo Salvini’s party is projected to win eight seats down from 28 in 2019. Feeding on Lega’s decreasing popularity, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia is projected to get 25 seats, two more than in Euractiv’s late-January projection. Meloni, who may run as the party’s lead candidate in the elections as Corriere della Sera reports, is expected to certify her party’s dominance over the other Italian right-wing forces while cementing her influence in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group. ✍️ Max Griera 👉 Read the full article here https://eurac.tv/9WRe 📊 Infographics and data input by Jakub Rogowiecki and Mathew Nicolson, Europe Elects. Euractiv Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition activist and key critic of Vladimir Putin, died in a penal colony on Friday (16 February), according to reports by Russian state media. His death was reported by the Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, according to Russian state RIA Novosti news agency. The report indicated that he became ill on February 16 in penal colony No. 3 during a walk. Navalny “almost immediately lost consciousness”, it said. Medical workers were sent to him, and “an ambulance crew was also called”. “Putin has been informed of Navalny’s death,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “Now the Penitentiary service is engaged in checks and clarifications, according to existing rules. What happened – medics should sort out,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. 👉 Read the full article in the link in bio ✍️ Petr Kozlov 📷 EPA-EFE/PATRICK SEEGER (2 years ago)

Euractiv In her own country, the European Commission president’s green push has made her more popular with political opponents than her own conservative CDU. The tricky relationship reinforces pressure for her to campaign against her own record as she is expected to announce her second-term bid on Monday (19 February). Few things reflect Ursula von der Leyen’s ambition to shape a “geopolitical Commission” as much as her calendar. According to the official register on the Commission website, von der Leyen has taken at least 230 official trips to more than 60 countries, from Rwanda to South Korea, during four-and-a-half years in office so far. However, her home country remains the place the former German defence minister has paid most visits to. The calendar counts 33 trips, more than twice as many as she took to France, the next country in the ranking, excluding Belgium, her base, and trips to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. 👉 Read the full article: https://eurac.tv/9WR6 ✍️ Nick Alipour 📷 Euractiv illustration by Esther Snippe/Photos by EPA/Shutterstock (2 years ago)

Euractiv Sumar platform leader and Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz will travel to Palestine to sign several bilateral agreements, demand a ceasefire, and condemn the “hypocrisy” of the international community in the Middle East conflict, official sources confirmed on Wednesday. Díaz, who is also deputy prime minister, will travel to the region at the invitation of the Palestinian labour minister to sign a memorandum on labour relations, and will also take the opportunity to meet with human rights associations and demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the minister told Euractiv’s partner EFE on Wednesday. She also plans to denounce the “international hypocrisy” in the conflict. In Díaz’s words, international law is being violated in Gaza, committing war crimes and “killing children every day” with “the complicity and silence of the entire international community”. Among Sumar’s conditions for a government agreement with Sánchez was Spain’s recognition of the “Palestinian state”. According to those same sources, the definitive date of the trip, of which Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been informed, has not yet been set, although it is expected to happen soon. 👉 Read the full article here https://eurac.tv/9WR0 ✍️ Fernando Heller 📷 EPA-EFE/KIKO HUESCA Add a comment… (2 years ago)

Go say that to the thousands of Frenchmen fallen in our revolutionary war. If it wasn't for their colossal military and financial support, the US of A would have remained a mere dream. Show some respect for all the hard work they're pulling in Afghanistan and across the oceans.

I was really touched that despite the fact that these pirates are criminals bent on criminal activity (and not getting into the economic deprivations - over fishing etc... that cause these kinds of things in the first place), the French treated them humanely. I laughed when I saw the baguettes... winning the world over with French food. Vive la France!
